If you work as an HVAC professional, you’ve probably noticed thatductless unitshave become in increasingly high demand among both residential andcommercial projects. Clients enjoy, for example, that these units don’t require a lot of retrofitting and are easy to maintain.
More than ever, it is important that HVAC technicians know how to confidently and correctly install these systems. While it is always recommended that you refer to the manufacturer’s specific installation instructions, most ductless systems will follow the same general process.
When installing a ductless heat pump system to a home, the first step is to select the proper location for the indoor unit (IDU) with respect to airflow, proper condensate drainage, and power requirements. Specifically, you’ll need to ensure that the unit is installed in a location that is not exposed to direct sunlight and is not near a heating or cooling source (such as a stove, window, or open door).
Next, it’s time to choose the ideal location for the system’s outdoor unit (ODU). If using a pad, this means making sure the pad itself is level. If mounting the unit on an exterior wall, HVAC technicians should take special care to ensure that the wall anchors being used are adequate to hold the weight of the unit itself.
Attention to detail must also be exercised in maintaining clearance requirements, minimum airflow requirements, ample condensate drainage, and proper service space.
During the wintertime, aductless systemgoes through an automatic Defrost Mode (dF) to prevent the freezing of coils; when this occurs, condensation will be released. This condensation needs to have a proper place to drain without pooling and creating a walking hazard, so HVAC technicians should keep this in mind when choosing an ODU location.
There are two refrigeration pipes and a power cable that are typically needed to connect the ODU to the IDU. The proper hole size for wall penetration is generally between 2.5 and 3.5 inches. When connecting the IDU and ODU, it is important to follow all installation rules and requirements, especially as they relate to minimum and maximum refrigerant piping distances per the installation manual.
Once the IDU and ODU are successfully connected, the ductless system needs to be pressurized and checked for leaks. If any leaks are detected, repairs must be completed before putting the system into evacuation mode to remove air, nitrogen, and other non-condensables from the system itself.
Finally, the refrigerant line from the ODU to the IDU should be measured and weighed so that the proper amount of refrigerant can be charged to the ductless system. You should always refer to the instructions in the installation manual for this. Once this is complete, the system should be ready to be used in heating or cooling mode as needed.
